Skunk #1 Botanical Formula
First: Cross a P1: Colombian Santa Marta ‘Gold’ female sativa X Afghan male indica =>
Next: Cross a first familial generation (F1) accession X a Equitorial ‘Gold’ Mexican male sativa from Alcapulco
Presto! => Skunk #1
The ‘Skunk’ lineage of Cannabis was originally discovered by a group of San Francisco Bay enthusiasts a-way back in the early 70’s while attempting to ‘beat the heat’ by going indoors after Nixon’s famous rescheduling of Cannabis to Schedule I in 1970.
Taking an already unstable [Colombian Santa Marta ‘Gold’ sativa X Afghan indica] F1 accession, and then crossing her with pollen from a centuries stable equitorial ‘Gold’ Mexican sativa from Alcapulco turned out to be the ‘trick’ that would jumpstart the hydroponic indoor garden industry in America, the Netherlands and beyond.
Today, after (40 +) years of stable development, ‘Skunk #1’ is a good example of a hybrid expressing predominantly sativa traits.
As a testament to the wizardry and fortitude of the original group of ‘guerillas’ from SF Bay, nearly half of all the varieties sold by Dutch seed companies over the past (40 +) years have had ‘Skunk #1’ genetics in their background.
And, what a canvas ‘Skunk #1’ became for all enthusiastic breeders and gardeners to draw upon!
The Dutch, one of history’s most prolific and consummate global trading countries of the ‘enlightenment’ period were basically an import, hashish-smoking culture back in the ‘60’s while at the same time attempting to grow cannabis both outdoors and in greenhouses (weather permitting) with only moderate success.
Sad to say, but ‘Nederwiet’ which literally translates to ‘low weed’ in English was considered a joke among serious Cannabis aficionados of the time.
Enter the original American breeders of the now stabilized cultivar named ‘Skunk #1’.
The new stabalized ‘Skunk’ line of Cannabis helped change everything that would eventually be considered ‘gourmet’ Cannabis from that point on, in Holland and throughout the world.
Under the then current technology of Dutch greenhouse conditions, Skunk #1 was shown to regularly mature and consistently produce ever higher yields of potent buds, even when successive generations of inbred ‘Skunk #1’ were grown directly from seed, a pure indication of a ‘true bred’ subset of traits.
'Skunk #1' then began to be cross'd with just about every landrace known to man to produce a whole lineage of stable winners after winners.
Although the ‘indica’ phenotype does makes up a quarter of the original Skunk #1 lineage and thus contributes to its shorter and bushier, inter-nodal dimensions, the original Skunk #1 was primarily a sweet-smelling sativa hybrid rather than a basic, acrid-smelling hashish ‘indica’ plant from Afghanistan.
So, the name ‘Skunk’ is actually somewhat misleading and a bit of a misnomer for this now infamous lineage.
And, despite the general uniformity of the lineage, there still are several different types of buds that can form in a Skunk #1 descendant ranging from reddish gold n hairy buds with small bracts, to much larger bracts with copious resin glands to boot!
With all of today’s current focus on the development of the ‘white’ medicinal strains throughout the breeding community, one can only surmise what secrets still lie lock’d within the genome of a Skunk #1 descendant.
We do know the Dutch are good ‘husbands’ and preservers of the Skunk #1 lineage throughout the past decades of modern Cannabis prohibition, and in spite of reports of ongoing intense persecution and coersion by the USA and DEA officials over the years upon the political leaders of the independent country of ‘The Netherlands’, our Dutch friends have been able to coax out and stablize even more desireable traits from the original ‘Superweit’.
How about ‘fast growing’, ‘early flowering’ (8-9 wks) and ‘excellent yield’ (500 gr/m2) along with a ‘tight bud formation’ and medium stature (50 - 80cm in height) for starters?
As a stable genetic substrate to launch your own foray into the world of Cannabis breeding, the given level of THC intensity (10 - 15%), the current THC/CBD ratio and the instant red-gold coloring of the calyx, bracts, anthers and pistals of both sexes of the plant is a perfect launching pad for you to consider building your own personal medicinal strain upon.
Priced in todays’ market at a ‘through-back’ 2.5 euros per achene, and coupled with a free ‘grab bag’ handful of other genetics from the current seed stash of one of Amsterdam’s most venerated and prolific cannabis cup breeders, how can you miss?
If you end up being one-half as courageous and smart as the original heritage behind the world’s first true-bred ‘uber’ strain of medicinal marijuana, then your career as a bonafide breeder of fine ‘ganja’ will have only the sky as a limit of how far you can take your most private incarnations of what you feel can be a true winner for your patient end-users.
